Dread moisturizers are an important part of keeping your hair and scalp healthy without itch.I would however suggest that those of you at the beginning of the dreading process try to stay away from them. Why? Because moisturizers/conditioners hydrate and smooth out the hair making it less likely to tangle and dread. If your hair is too dry and breaking then you better do something but just don’t go overboard with the moisturizers. Once your dreads are mature these products are no problem. I have used both sprays and creams, applying them to both the dreads and scalp. It can be a great help, especially in the winter with the cold dry air.

Listed below are a few of what I call the best moisturizers/conditioners out there. This includes creams and sprays. They are intended as “leave in” products.

1. Knotty Boy Green Tea Enlightenment Dreadlock Conditioning Spray (8 oz)knottyboyconditioner

This product really works well. It is made from 100% natural ingredients as Knotty Boy always does it. The green tea scent is pleasant. You are supposed to feel like you are a beach in Tahiti with this scent, although I have never felt that way. They say this spray gives dried out locks their life back and they are right. I didn’t know how unhealthy mine looked at one point in time until I used this and saw how healthy they could be.

Other Scents – Purple Haze Lavender and Coco (prices vary slightly)

3. Dread Head Dread Butta Advanced Dread Moisturizerdreadbutta

Dread Butta contains all natural ingredients and is accepted by vegans. Some of the more important ingredients in this product include Theopbroma Cacao (Cocoa) Extract, Mineral Oil (Paraffinum Liquidum), Microcrystalline Wax (Cera Microcristallina), and Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Seed Butter. As you may see it does contain wax. However, its concentration is not very high. The fragrance of this butter comes from the Cocoa butter which is pleasant. I have used this product in the past and it worked well for me. It will leave your dreads smooth and your scalp moisturized. I would compare the feel of it to that of Shea or Cocoa butter cream. Its a thick cream that rubs in nicely.

4. Jamaican Mango & Lime Lock Gro (6oz)lockgrow

This product is a moisturizer the promotes hair growth. Its active ingredients include petroleum, mineral oil, and castor oil (Ricunus Communis seed oil). When I first read its label I saw petroleum and right away was thinking it would leave hair a greasy mess. I have never tried this product myself but according to most customer reviews it is not too greasy, but I guess that depends on your hair-type. It also is said to work very well for increasing hair growth and of course moisturizing.

5. Jamaican Mango & Lime Island Oil (8oz)jamaicanislandoil

This moisturizing oil a mixture of many thin oils that gives your hair a healthy non-greasy feel. As you can see from the bottle it is not a spray. The mixture of oils inside include mineral oil, castor oil(Ricinus Commonis Seed Oil), carrot oil(Daucus Carota Sativa Seed Oil), jojoba oil(Simmoondsia Seed Oil), olive oil(Olea Europaea Oil), and tea tree oil(Melaleuca Alternitolia Leaf Oil).
